Efflorescence on Stone: What It Is and How to Fix It
That chalky white haze on your stone or masonry has a name, and a fix.
What efflorescence is
Stone hardscapes like fire pits, walls and patios are a beautiful centerpiece for any outdoor space, but they are vulnerable to a common issue: efflorescence. This chalky white or hazy discoloration forms when moisture moves through stone or masonry and carries mineral salts to the surface, where they crystallize as the water evaporates.
Left untreated, efflorescence dulls the natural color and texture of the stone and makes even well-built features look aged or neglected before their time.
Why mountain climates make it worse
Frequent rain, humidity and freeze-thaw cycles all speed up moisture movement through the material, which makes stone in our area especially prone to it.
How sealing helps prevent it
Sealing stone after installation, and periodically afterward, is one of the most effective ways to keep efflorescence from forming in the first place, because it limits how much moisture penetrates the surface. Learn more about stone and masonry sealing.
If it is already there
If efflorescence has already set in, it can typically be removed. We specialize in choosing the right cleaning approach for the specific stone and renewing its original color and texture as closely as possible, then applying a proper seal to help protect it going forward. See graffiti and stain removal for how the process works.
