Stone and masonry are porous. Moisture moves through them, and in our region's freeze-thaw climate that moisture causes staining, mildew and eventually damage. As it moves it can also carry mineral salts to the surface, which shows up as efflorescence, the chalky white haze that dulls the look of stonework.
Cleaning removes buildup, mildew and staining. Sealing afterward limits how much moisture gets in, which is one of the most effective ways to keep stone looking the way it should.
What we work on

How we approach it
Identify the stone and what is on it
Different stone and different stains need different cleaning, and the wrong cleaner can mark the surface.
Clean
We use a method matched to the material and rinse it thoroughly.
Let it dry
Sealer goes on dry masonry.
Seal
A sealer limits moisture and helps protect against staining and efflorescence.
Common questions
Why does stone need to be sealed?
Stone is porous. Sealing limits how much moisture gets in, which helps prevent staining, mildew, efflorescence and freeze-thaw damage.
Does sealing change how stone looks?
It depends on the sealer. Some keep the natural look and some deepen the color. We can talk through the finish before we start.
